The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole launches the President Muhammadu Buhari Restore Vision Project specifically aimed at restoring people’s sight through surgical intervention.
During the launch at Makarfi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Northwest, Nigeria, the Minister said, about ten thousand Nigerians suffering from cataract would be operated upon across the Country.
He disclosed that, 250 visually impaired persons from each States of the Federation would benefit from the surgical intervention.
According to the Minister, they were in Kaduna to partner with Honourable Mohammed Usman, member representing Makarfi/Kudan Federal constituency to flag off the medical mission aimed at improving people’s lives.
“Through this initiative, we would be restoring vision to 10 thousand poor Nigerians, 250 per State, saying, they are targeting to treat about three million patients who cannot afford the medical intervention”.
“Last year, we offered cataract surgery to over eight thousand people across the country who normally would not have been able to pay, adding that, they had already done twenty surgeries today”.
Professor Adewole explained that the intervention which is a partnership between the Federal and State governments is being supported by the opthalmological society of Nigeria, and the sight savers, amongst other donors to solve the plight of numerous people with treatable cataract blindness.
Earlier in his address, the member representing Makarfi/Kudan Federal constituency, Honourable Mohammed Usman mentioned that a hundred people have been selected to undergo the eye surgery within his constituency.
” Other interventions to be benefited include; medical surgery for a hundred hynea patients, distribution of treated mosquito nets and multivitamin to pregnant women, as well as distributing vitamins and albendazole to children under five years “.
Usman said, being the Deputy Chairman, house committee on health care services, he utilized the opportunity to rehabilitated sixteen Primary Health Centers PHCs domiciled in his constituency.
In his remark, the President, Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria, OSN, Doctor Ayobade Ogundipe said, their members, who specialize in eye treatment have volunteered to perform the cataract operations anywhere the project would be carried out in the Country.
” The last National conference of OSN was held in Kaduna and we developed a strategic plan of putting all our resources to making the Nation free of avoidable or treatable blindness, he stressed “.
Dr. Ogundipe said with the launch of the National project, OSN has been given a platform to exhibit their willingness to help restore vision to the cataract blind and also give them a new lease of life.
On his part, Kaduna State governor, Nasiru El-Rufai extended gratitude to the Minister for choosing to Flag off the project in Kaduna state.
He called on the Opthalmological Society of Nigeria and other partners to do more of the initiated project for the people to restore their eye sights.
