69,000 candidates write teachers’ qualifying exams nationwide

A total number of 69,000 candidates have written the 2019 October Diet Professional Qualifying Examination PQE, of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, TRCN.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono ,made this known to Journalists in Abuja while monitoring the exams at SASCON, one of the Computer Based Test Centres for the exams in Abuja.

Echono also announced the suspension of the PQE CBT centre at the University of Ibadan following what he described as unruly behaviours by the candidates.

He commended the TRCN for the organisation of the exams which was written in 47 CBT centres across Nigeria.

According to Echono, “there is improvement in the logistics , candidates images are right in front of the system ,An exam Supervisor will easily see the photo image of the candidates,it is easy for the exam monitoring officials to confirm that the candidate sitting for the exam is actually the person with the identity”

The Permanent Secretary further disclosed that the federal government is embarking on massive enrolment drive to get children in school and tackle the out of school challenge facing the country.

“As we make progress on strengthening of teachers quality, the federal government is embarking on massive enrolment drive across the country to get children in school and it will naturally create new challenges for us, this is why we are concerned about teacher quality”

“Also the Organisation of the examination hall is commendable as candidates placed beside each other don’t write the same exams , this minimises collision and exam malpractices,” Echono added.

He reiterated that the Dec. 31st deadline to end quackery in teaching profession in Nigeria still stands ,Echono stressed that the government is working on teachers data base to collate the data of certified and qualified teachers.

Anyone not certified or qualified to teach will not have any place in our classroom , we will begin the implementation in January 2020″

We have also asked the TRCN to make contingency arrangements for additional diet to accommodate individuals who are just doing registration to write the PQE”

He emphasised that Computer literacy is now Compulsory for all the teachers.

On the suspension of the PQE CBT centre in University of Ibadan, The Permanent Secretary said the centre remains suspended.

The Registrar of the Council, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, said the council has issued several letter of Professional standing to some Nigerians in Diaspora following their certification as qualified teachers.

According to Prof. Ajiboye ” if we give you letter of Professional standing , it gives you recognition as a professional teacher in any country of the world, the letter of Professional standing is a document of trust made by the TRCN to certify our citizens who intends to teach abroad having ensured that they are qualified to teach”

On the acceptance & recognition of letter of Professional standing,  Prof Ajiboye stated that “the African Federation of teaching Regulatory Authorities and the International forum for teaching Regulatory Authorities, the central  bodies brings together all teaching regulatory activities in the world, 

“Already the State Directorates of licensure and certification in the U.S have seen what we are doing in Nigeria as regards Teachers Professionalism ,they have also seen our code of conducts ,TRCN have met with them to make sure that Nigerian teachers are widely recognised,”’ he added.

The TRCN boss further disclosed that Africa alone has a deficit shortfall of 7Million teachers and that Nigeria accounts for the largest number.

“We need a lot of teachers in our schools ,some states have not recruited teachers in the last 10years , when you get to some schools you will find only four teachers in the entire school”

On the suspended centre Prof Ajiboye explained that, According to the Registrar, ” the UI centre is the only Computer Based Test centre for the PQE that we got unpleasant reports, teachers became unruly , a large number of them besieged the CBT hall and claimed to write their exams all at once ,so we had to discontinue our exams there”.

“Although we have three centres in Oyo State ” he added.

A teacher in one of the private schools in Abuja, Temitope Oladipo, who was also a candidate at SASCON PQE CBT centre told Voice of Nigeria that the TRCN teachers exam is the theory aspect of teachers activities in class.

“I know it is necessary for us as teachers to have this teachers license from TRCN , that is why I registered for the exam and to ensure that our profession, teaching will cease to be an all comers Profession,” Miss Oladipo said.

NCE graduates purchase the Professional Qualifying Examination form for N3000 while degree holders buy the exam form for N3500.

Voice of Nigeria had earlier reported that Oyo State have the highest numbers of candidates with 5,145, Lagos State have 5117, Kaduna 4616 , 4214 candidates FCT  the 2019 Oct diet PQE.

3709 candidates registered in Plateau State while Zamfara State has the lowest numbers if candidates with 397 candidates”.
