A last gasp rocket from Riyad Mahrez led Algeria to reach the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations final after defeating Nigeria 2-1 at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday night.
Algeria will face Senegal, who went through to the final earlier after beating Tunisia 1-0 in extra time.
The Teranga Lions of Senegal justified their pre-tournament tag as favourites to qualify for their second Africa Cup of Nations final in 17 years.
Both Tunisia and Senegal missed penalties in the second half, and the game headed to extra time after a 0-0 draw.
Senegal then took the lead as Hassen parried the ball back to play and it hit Bronn on the face and into the back of the net. 1-0 to the West Africans!
In the Nigeria game versus Algeria, Mahrez’s cross led to William Troost-Ekong putting the ball into his own net after 40 minutes.
Then the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) gave the Super Eagles a penalty from which Odion Ighalo found the equalizer at the 70th minute.
However, Mahrez scored a superb rocket of a freekick to hand Les Fennecs a place in the final four minutes into stoppage time amidst wild celebrations from Algerian supporters.
The final will be between Algeria and Senegal in Friday’s AFCON final. What a tournament it has been for both Algeria and Senegal.
