Afcon postponement : Hossam El-Badry heaves a sigh of relief

Egyptian national team coach Hossam El-Badry has expressed his relief at the decision of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to postpone the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals to 2022.

CAF announced last week that the tournament, set to be hosted in Cameroon and scheduled for early next year, has instead been pushed a year down the road to 2022 – due to the effects of Covid-19.

The coronavirus pandemic changed our plan, and sure, the postponement decision made me comfortable,” El-Badry told Al-Nahar TV channel earlier this week,

“I expect that continental football activity will be resumed in October through playing the African World Cup qualifiers, and if not we will work on playing friendly matches,” the Pharaohs coach added.

Egypt, seven-time winners of the AFCON, were knocked out of the 2019 edition of the tournament on home soil by South Africa just over a year ago.

Their quest to qualify for the 2022 AFCON has seen them held to draws by Kenya and Comoros, with a double-header against Togo set to be played when the qualifiers are able to resume.
