The Athletics Federation of Nigeria has said the National U-20 Trials will hold on June 7 and 8 at the Delta State Polytechnic Sports Centre in Ozoro.
The competition had been shrouded by a cloud of uncertainty following the cancellation of the fourth Golden League, which was initially slated to hold in Ozoro on May 25 and 26.
However, according to a release sent to state associations, clubs, institutions and paramilitary organisations by the AFN on Friday, the Polytechnic Sports Centre in Ozoro is expected to be a beehive of activities when the U-20 Trials get underway next week.
According to the release, participating athletes are expected to arrive in Ozoro on June 6 while the departure date is slated for June 9.
At least three international events will be staged later this year starting with the IAAF World U-20 Championships holding in Finland from July 10 to 15, the African Youth Games in Algeria from July 17 to 27 and the Youth Olympic Games billed to hold in Argentina from October 6 to 18. Technical Director of the federation Sunday Adeleye said more than 200 junior athletes are expected to participate in the event, which will be used to select Nigeria’s contingent to these events.
“We expect a large turnout of junior athletes for this competition because the athletes have been mostly inactive after the Commonwealth Games.
We have a target to win medals at the competitions we are participating in this year and as such we expect a keen competition among the athletes in the various events they participate in.” he said.
