Akinyele killings: Oyo Police nab suspects

Olubunmi Osoteku, Ibadan

The Oyo State Police Command has nabbed the perpetrators and collaborators behind the various killings in the Akinyele Area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Security, Mr Fatai Owoseni, gave the hint while speaking with newsmen at a Special Town Hall Session on the state of insecurity in the Akinyele area of the State.

The event, facilitated by an Ibadan-based radio station, Jamz 100.1FM, at the Award Hall, Akinyele Local Government Area, Moniya, Ibadan, was attended by stakeholders including lawmakers, community leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders and youth groups.

The community, which had been enmeshed in a series of killings that included women, girls and a five-year-old boy, under various guises, had been in the news, of late, for negative reasons.

Although the Police have yet to make public the identities of those arrested, a top government source hinted that about 95 per cent of what should be done had been done.

While noting that the Police is on the verge of prosecuting the arrested suspects, Owoseni, a retired Commissioner of Police, assured that the government would gather all the submissions, suggestions and ideas from all the stakeholders and put to use.

Owoseni stated, “The security and law enforcement agencies, especially the Police, that is saddled with the investigation of that case have covered a lot of grounds. I can say that, as of now, about 95 per cent has been done. I said 95 per cent because, it is one thing to apprehend a principal suspect in a case, and his conspirators, it is another thing to prosecute successfully.”

He encouraged residents of Oyo State, particularly Akinyele Local Government Area, to play their part because of security and safety of lives, noting that citizens also have their obligations in supporting the security agencies to carry out their obligations diligently.

Owoseni disclosed authoritatively that with the level of work done so far by the police, by nabbing the perpetrators, their sponsors and collaborators, what is left is for the Police to take the suspects to court to account for their deeds.

“But we will not wait there alone. It is one thing to arrest the perpetrators and it is another thing for us all to collaborate and work together to ensure our safety and that we as people and residents also have roles to play in our safety and security and not that we should leave it to the government and security agencies alone,” he affirmed.

He admonished citizens to play their roles and appealed to security agencies to also do their jobs well and not play along with criminals.
