APC hails legislators maturity on 2020 Budget Presentation

Nigeria’s governing party, the All Progressives Congress, APC says it is satisfied with the renewed harmonious relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government.

National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole said this in an interview with State House Correspondents in Abuja.

Oshiomhole said the maturity displayed by the legislators during the 2020 budget presentation by President Muhammadu Buhari was exceptional.

He said: “We saw a very matured assembly, a very warm environment, encouraging the President, compared to what we witnessed almost a year ago, the last time the President was in that chambers when the then presiding officers of the National Assembly instigated their members to boo the President, which is never done in any democracy.

“The President carries the authority of the State and when you look at the atmosphere in the same chambers this year, it was very friendly and yet the leadership asserted the independence of the House and the President took a bow before the National Assembly because he was in their domain.

“We as a party, we are excited about this renewed partnership between the executive and legislature because even when we speak of separation of powers, there is only one government and that was on display during the budget presentation. I am very happy.”

The APC Chairman said he was also excited because the budget proposal for next year was laid before the legislators in October, which according to him, paves the way for the country to return to the January-December budget cycle.

“One of the reasons why I am very excited is because in recent years, even under the previous administration, this is the first time that the federal budget is being presented to the National Assembly within the first quarter of the month of October.

“This for me is extremely important because there has been this bug passing, when the National Assembly passes the budget in the middle of the year, they usually it was not submitted in time therefore, there was nothing they could do.

“So I am excited that in line with the spirit of the next level, the President is able to present a comprehensive budget in the first quarter of October and even more reassuring is the statement Made by the leadership of the National Assembly; the two chambers that they will do everything possible; because once the President has done his part, the National Assembly will also do its part such that we can return to January-December budget cycle and for us in the party, that is very important because it shows that the President is ready to accelerate the pace of work,” he explained.

Also speaking to State House Correspondents, Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi hailed the composure of the legislators.

He said Nigerians stand to gain a lot form the harmonious working relationship between the executive and the legislature.
