Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission has been commended for the peaceful conduct of Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Lagos State.
National leader of the All Progressives Congress Senator Bola Tinubu gave the commendation after casting his vote at ward 3, unit 47, Alausa, Ikeja.
Senator Tinubu praised officials of INEC for the smooth running of the electoral process, though he observed that voting commenced late in some parts of the state.
The former governor of Lagos State decried the seemingly low turnout of voters for the gubernatorial poll.
He says the political class needs to do a lot to build the trust and confidence of the voting public in the electoral process.
“This is a season characterized by low turnout, I think we the politicians must devise a method to inspire our members to get people encouraged especially our youths. They need to be aware, informed and be carried along to take Democracy very seriously.”
Lagos is progressive
Senator Tinubu described Lagos state as the hub of the progressives and as such the ruling party will continue to get the support of residents.
He said attempts by some groups to replicate the “o to ge”(enough is enough) campaign of Kwara State in Lagos is dead on arrival.
“There is a limit to copy cat. We are the only party in Lagos, the rest are repeater stations. They come every four years and go back in again. This State belongs to the progressives, we are progressives and we are going to win the election,” he said.
