Nigeria’s governing party, the All Progressives Congress, APC will review the security architecture in its manifesto to deal with new security challenges that has arisen since it won the presidential election in 2015.
The party’s newly elected National Chairman, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole said this during the official handover of documents from the immediate past National Chairman, Mr. John Oyegun at the APC national secretariat in Abuja.
Oshiomole said that with the spate of increasing crisis of herdsmen/farmer clashes, a review of the manifesto was necessary.
“We committed ourselves as a party to fighting to ensure that book haram was defeated. “We never imagined that this other thing about herdsmen fighting farmers in the country, those have always been there, maybe they have been escalating, now in terms of going forward we must now review our security architecture to deal with new forms of criminality as they arise. Because the environment is dynamic, policies reflected in our manifesto must be subject to constant review” Oshiomole said.
He said that the APC would start holding annual conventions that would create avenues for the performance of leaders elected on its platform to be accessed.
While speaking on party, supremacy, he said it could only be operative when organs of the party meet and take decisions on policies
“For example when we take decisions in the National Executive council meeting and the president is seated, if the president violates or acts in contravention of a decision taken by NEC, even the president can be accused of anti party activities,” Oshiomole explained.
Plans for APC
While speaking on his plans for the party, he said the APC would establish a progressive institute.
“We need to have an institute where people understand that to be progressive is to be a party for social democracy that is progressive, pro-people, pro-workers, pro-poor, popular participation, people driven, people oriented so that those who are elected on our platform, we can have people from the extreme right as well as those from the extreme left all habituating on the same party platform,” he said.
The Chairman said the party would support both the executive and the legislative arms of government.
Compensation for workers
As a former Labour Union leader, Mr. Oshiomhole said he would revisit the compensation for workers at the party secretariat and pay attention to their welfare.
Meanwhile, there was an allegation from another political party, the Social Democratic Party that the APC had stolen its slogan known as ‘progress” but the new APC national chairman cleared this by saying the party’s slogan remains “Change”.
The APC National Chairman promised to build on the foundation that the former National Chairman, Mr. Oyegun had laid.
The former Chairman of the APC, ,Mr. Oyegun expressed hope that the APC would grow and be victorious under Oshiomhole’s leadership.
“I have put by thoughts down briefly, I didn’t want to make it long because thank God you have some of the best minds who have survived the electoral process and will be working with you. It is my expectations and prayers the yours will be a most distinguished and successful fours year” Oyegun said.
At the handover ceremony were the newly elected members of the National Working Committee for the APC amongst which were some old members who won election for another term in office.
