The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami has urged Nigerians to take advantage of the Freedom of Information Act to assist President Mohammad Buhari’s administration’s efforts in promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
Mr Malami stated this at the 3rd National Steering Committee Meeting of the Open Government Partnership, OGP held in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
He noted that the country was already making progress and gaining international recognition on its efforts in improving government transparency, accountability and responsiveness.
He also said that Open Government Partnership has prepared a comprehensive progress report that shows the extent of the implementation of its commitment area hence, the need for all Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government to key into it.
“I am using this medium to call on Ministers and Heads of departments and agencies to step up their engagement with the OGP in Nigeria to assist President Muhammadu Buhari in achieving the goals set out in the OGP Action Plan” he said.
The AGF assured that once President Buhari approves the Executive Order for the implementation of the OGP, it would form the basis for the establishment of its legal framework in Nigeria.
The National Coordinator of OGP in Nigeria who is also the Special Assistant to President Buhari on Justice Reforms, Juliet Nwagwu said that what OGP is doing is to create a framework where ministries, departments and agencies of government can begin to understand the principles of transparency and accountability and how to engage with citizens.
According to her “When President Buhari signed the OGP, we developed, in collaboration with civil society organizations and organized private sector a National Action Plan that speaks to what Nigerians want to see”
Open Government Partnership, OGP is an International Multi-stakeholders global coalition of reformers from government and civil society, working to make government transparent, participatory and accountable to serve and empower citizens.
