The Chairman of Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, LASUBEB, Wahab Alawiye-King has solicited the support of stakeholders in the education sector to partner with the government in its quest to improve teaching and learning at the basic education level.
Alawiye-King described the stakeholders comprising Education Secretaries in the State, Parent Teachers Forum, Association of Head Teachers, National Union of Teachers and School Based Management Committee among others as ‘critical’ in influencing members of their constituents to embrace government policies and programmes.
At a recently held Stakeholders’ meeting designed to enhance collaborative ways of improving basic education, the Chairman said that ”the state government is interested in involving them to ensure that the recruitment process is transparent, smooth and all-inclusive.”
The Chairman said that the involvement of stakeholders in decision making process of LASUBEB is very timely, as the State Government is already concluding plans to join other States who have domesticated the ‘National Home Grown School Feeding Programme’ initiated by the Nigerian Government for primary school pupils.
“There are several plans in the pipeline for our primary schools by the present administration in the State. For instance, our plans to digitise teaching and learning in our schools and also increase the numbers of our teachers among others would have a far-reaching effect if we involve these critical stakeholders,” he said.
A Board member of LASUBEB in charge of School Support Services, Dr. Saheed Ibikunle explained that Government would follow due process in the recruitment procedure, stressing that consideration would be given to some staff of LASUBEB who had indicated interest to convert from their present cadres to classroom teachers.
“The first stage of the recruitment process would be done online following the publication of the recruitment advertisement in National newspapers. This is to be followed by online and written assessments after which successful candidates would be selected,” he said.
Dr Ibikunle urged stakeholders and other parties that would be involved in the recruitment exercise not to give-in to any form of lobbying or pressure from members of the public but to ensure that qualified and competent brains are employed.
Board member in charge of Social Mobilisation Department of LASUBEB, Sijuade Idowu-Tiamiyu likened the critical stakeholders to a bridge needed by SUBEB to reach the larger members of the public. She noted that the need for the Board to collaborate with them in the policy implementation of government for the education sector cannot be over-emphasised.
Idowu-Tiamiyu urged the stakeholders to take ownership of all government infrastructure and projects within their domains by being the eyes and ears of government in their localities.
Another Board member in charge of Special Projects, Bayo Adefuye, highlighted the importance of the planned digitisation of primary schools in the State, stating that the innovative technology would help curb incidences of truancy and inefficiency amongst teachers and pupils, and ultimately improve teaching and learning outcomes.
He stressed that over 1,600 vendors had already been engaged by the Nigerian Government through Lagos State Government to kick start the Home Grown School Feeding programme for pupils in Primaries 1 to 3.
Speaking on the possibility of absorbing some members of N-power during the recruitment exercise, Dr. Ibikunle stated that any qualified member of the N-power could also apply when the application window is announced. He stressed that the Board would not compromise its standard under any circumstance.
The Chairman of Education Secretaries in Lagos State, Comrade Olalekan Majiyagbe who responded on behalf of the stakeholders, expressed optimism in the capability of the new team of LASUBEB to advance the State’s education sector.
He pledged the support of the stakeholders and promised that other members in their clusters would be adequately sensitised on the programmes, plans and policies of the State Government for the education sector.
