Nigeria’s emerging sprint queen Udo Joy Gabriel made a heroic effort to win for the host nation a bronze medal in the 100 metres final of the CAA 2018 holding in Asaba, Delta state.
Joy-Gabriel finished with a time of 11.58 seconds to win her first individual medal.
The 19 year old was discovered through the “Top Sprinter Reality Show,” and was part of Nigeria’s sprint team to the 2018 Commonwealth Games held earlier in April in Gold Coast, Australia.
Her victory is significant because Nigeria’s hope of extending her dominance in the sprints for women was dealt a severe blow after veteran Blessing Okagbare suddenly withdrew from the 100 metres and 200 metres events on Wednesday.
Expectedly, Ivory Coast’s Marie Josee Ta Lou won the gold medal in a time of 11.15 seconds.
Ghana’s Janet Amponsah picked up the silver clocking 11.54 seconds.
