Voice of Nigeria's Godwin Ukaa interviews Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Nigeria, Dr. Zhou Pingjian

The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Nigeria, Dr. Zhou Pingjian, has alleged the infiltration of foreign influence to the prolonged crisis of protest in Hong Kong that is now part of China.

Dr. Pingjian, stated this in an exclusive interview with Voice of Nigeria’s “In The News” Programme in Abuja.

He explains that the most pressing and overriding task of Hong Kong is to stop violence, end the chaos and restore order, so as to safeguard Hong Kong and prevent it from sinking into abyss.

Hong Kong has been embroiled in crisis since June 2019 due to an anti-extradition bill protests.

Protests in Hong Kong

There have been series of ongoing demonstrations in Hong Kong against the Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill, proposed by the government of Hong Kong.

According to Ambassador Pingjian, the anti-extradition bill protests have turned into radical violent behaviors that seriously violate the law, undermine security and social order in Hong Kong, and endanger local people’s safety, property and normal life.

“In essence, the recent violence and conflict are manipulated behind the scenes by elements who aimed to destabilise and damage Hong Kong,” Ambassador Pingjian said.

The envoy alleged that ill-intentioned forces, both inside and outside of Hong Kong, seek to turn the Special Administrative Region, SAR, into a bridgehead to attack the mainland’s system and spark chaos across China.

In the People’s Republic of China, SAR is a relatively- autonomous region like Hong Kong or Macau.

“It is clear for all to see that the deteriorating situation is linked to the irresponsible remarks concocted by some western politicians, certain people in the US in particular,” Dr. Pingjian said.

“They’ve also publicly smeared and vilified the just move of the SAR government, and police to uphold the rule of law and order,” he added.

Dr. Pingjian said any attempt to endanger China’s sovereignty and security, challenge the authority of the central government and the sanctity of the Basic Law of the Hong Kong SAR.

He also said that any attempt to use the issue of Hong Kong as a channel for infiltration and sabotage against the mainland, is an act that crosses the red line, and is absolutely impermissible.

“The Chinese government will never allow foreign forces to have a hand in Hong Kong’s affairs; neither will the government allow them to mess up Hong Kong,” Dr. Pingjian said.

The envoy said the central government firmly supports Hong Kong Chief Executive, Carrie Lam in leading the SAR government to administer the SAR in accordance with the laws of the land.

Th envoy also firmly supports the Hong Kong police in strictly enforcing the laws, and firmly supports the punishment of violent criminals in accordance with law.

He added that the central government will not sit by if the situation in Hong Kong worsens to a point, where the SAR government could not handle it.

As empowered by the Basic Law of Hong Kong; SAR, the central authorities have sufficient capabilities to promptly settle any possible turmoil that may occur.

The future and destiny of Hong Kong must and can only be put in the hands of all Chinese people, including the Hong Kong compatriots.

Protests in Hong Kong

Dr. Zhou Pingjian said that Hong Kong is facing the most severe situation since its return to the motherland, China, in 1997.

Dr. Pingjian said 2019 is a big year for China, as the country marks its seventieth anniversary on October 1 this year.

The envoy also said the relations existing between China and Nigeria will move to a new level in there bilateral cooperation, as the two countries mark their anniversary on the same day, October 1.

“This year marks a lot of programmes we are doing approaching the big day and that big day we are very happy to share with our Nigerian friends, 1st October is Chinese National Day and Nigerian National Day,” Dr. Pingjian added.

So, we believe the October 1st is special bond between Nigeria and China with the Peoples Republic of China celebrating.
