Secretaries of the Election Petition Tribunals in Nigeria have been urged not to allow politicians to use them as tools to truncate democracy in the country by compromising their duties as secretaries of the tribunals.

The President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa stated this at the opening ceremony of a one day training program for  the Election Petition Tribunal Secretariat Staff organized by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Justice Bulkachuwa said that the aim of the training is expected to expose the participants with the practical knowledge, experience and the guidance needed to carry out their duties in the tribunals in the best interest of the nation.

“You were chosen as the secretariat staff for the election petition tribunals based on the trust and confidence the court reposed on them hence urged them to discharge their duties with integrity,” she noted.

She also noted that the procedures for resolving electoral disputes may differ from conventional legal disputes, but the institutions governing them are the same.
