Judges of the Election Petition Tribunals in Nigeria have been cautioned not to grant frivolous adjournment on election petitions before them.

The President of the Court of Appeal in Nigeria, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa gave the charge at the Induction Programme for Judges and Members of the Election Petition Tribunals in Abuja, Nigeria.

Remarking at the event, Justice Bulkachuwa said that the judiciary has been playing a major role in the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria, hence judicial officers must discharge their duties in accordance with the constitution.

She also noted that in election petition, time is critical therefore, judges must discourage the practice of employing undue technicalities capable of causing delay in the dispensation of justice.

“My office will monitor the members of the election petition tribunals closely to ensure that  judges adhere strictly to the led down rules” she said.

Justice Bulkachuwa also urged the judges to feel free to interact with each other on areas not clear especially those that will be handling election petitions for the first time.
