Nigeria's Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami.

The Nigerian Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami has urged  telecommunications service providers to subsidise ,relax calls and data rates for Nigerians.

In his twitter handle, Dr Pantami said;

Many Nigerians took to the social media calling on the telecommunications service providers to give free services due to the COVID-19 crisis ravaging the World.

In October 2019, Dr Pantami had lamented that Nigerians do not enjoy internet services despite spending huge funds on purchase of data.

He quoted a report from a UK-based price comparison website which rated Nigeria as below the top 10 African countries with low average price of data.

The Minister said; ”this was lamentable, especially considering the fact that Nigeria has over 174 million internet users as confirmed by the NCC.”

In view of this Dr Pantami directed the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, the telecom regulators, to immediately work hand-in-hand with the telecoms operators and ensure a downward review of the price of data in Nigeria.

The minister also demanded improved quality of service provided as well as checking the illegal deduction of subscribers’ data.
