The Cross River State Governor has urged the people to focus on the sparkling moments of Nigeria’s history at the 59th Independence Anniversary celebration.
Governor Ben Ayade made the call at the Independence celebration held in Calabar, the capital city of the southern Nigerian State.
National Pride
Governor Ayade, who was represented by his deputy, Professor Ivara Esu noted that despite various challenges, which bedeviled the country since it achieved independence from colonial rule on October 1, 1960, Nigerians have course to celebrate.
According to him, no nation has ever berthed on a roller coaster or fulfilled its destiny without sweat, insisting that as Nigerians, we should be determined to improve on the future.
As we celebrate today, we cannot say with absolute conviction that 59 years down the line, it has been a bed of roses.  At best, it has been a potpourri, at times chequered, disappointing, hard and fraught with challenges that so often dulled our spirits,” he noted.
“Inspite of those dispirited moments, there has been sparkling times that we radiated so much national pride as a people, following our chain of accomplishments as a nation. And against all odds, we have continued to bounce back, to rediscover ourselves by staying focused, steadfast and optimistic.”
Reawakening
The Governor advised the people to continue to have hope and belief in the nations unity and refocus on making Nigeria better and greater through the deliberate and collective efforts of all.
“With our minds firmly fixed on the ever-glittering skyline, we shall surely chart a pathway to our destination.  More importantly, todays celebration should no doubt serve as a reawakening and an enticing platform to reflect on our past in order to recalibrate our future.”he stated
Ayade assured citizens of his administration determination to industrialise Cross River to guarantee more employment opportunities.
We shall not relent until we ensure that the people of Cross River are indeed rescued and clawed back from the socio-economic quagmire, which has held us captive to hunger and lack,” stressed the Governor,” he stated.
Highlight of the celebration were a command performance by the Nigeria Police Force and parades by school children and other uniformed organizations at the sport arena.
