Sports minister Solomon Dalung says adequate funding is necessary for the development of sports in states.
Speaking during the opening of the 2nd Akwa Ibom State Youth Sports Festival in Uyo Tuesday, Dalung said sports festival was important to sports development in states.
The minister, who was represented at the event by a permanent secretary in the ministry, Esther Aluko, said regular and adequate funding would help build a strong base for sports development in the states.
Dalung said, “A state sports festival is a grassroots sport development programme which is critical to attaining high performance and success in sports. The development of high performance sport from grassroots to the early level should now be the focus for states.”
He commended the Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel for making it possible for the pupils to showcase their talents through the festival.
The governor said, “We have come here today not as supporters of a particular political party, not as agents of a given political or tribal association, not as Ibibios, Annangs or Oros, we have come here today as proud Akwaibomites ready and willing to unleash our healthy competitive spirit that represents the very soul and essence of the Akwa Ibom character and person as we kick-start this festival christened Uyo 2018.”
