ECOWAS member states have been tasked to ensure 30 percent representation of women in the ECOWAS Parliament.
The Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Mr. Moustapha Cisse-Lo made the call when he paid a courtesy visit to the President of Burkina Faso and the Speaker of Burkina Faso National Assembly on Wednesday in Ouagadougou.
Mr. Cisse Lo said that 30 percent women representation in the ECOWAS Parliament is one of the major objectives he hopes to achieve before the end of his tenure in 2020.
He disclosed that presently ECOWAS have not achieved that because member States mostly select men for the Parliament.
“There is also the gender issues, out of 100, we must have 30 percent of women in each delegation, so all ECOWAS member States should ensure that its achieved.”
“We also ask the Burkina Faso Head of State to be our voice in forum of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government.
“We also talked about the 4th legislature and the coming 5th legislature, we expect the incoming MPs to continue our work and even do better than us.”
Mr. Cisse Lo who said his tenure will end in 2020 said the regional parliament will ensure continuity on the projects aimed at improving the lives of the people in the region.
