Education minister inaugurates board members, governing councils

Board members and governing councils of agencies and institutions under the Federal Ministry of Education have been inaugurated.

Inaugurating the Council members in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister of Education,  Adamu Adamu ,said the council members were to set policies and directions, as well as give support to management of their organisations.

The minister who noted that the councils are to provide governance and leadership style that  will engender transparency and accountability urged the members to be innovative and responsive.

Adamu, who reminded members of the boards that the current administration was running an agenda of change with education as a major pillar, urged them to carry out their assignments with professionalism, dedication, sincerity and patriotism.

 “You are expected to be guided by the conditions of your appointments as contained in your letters of appointment and other relevant government circulars as issued from time to time. With your appointment as boards, I expect you to play your roles with skill and efficiency,” he said.

It is the board that reviews, approves and monitors the agency’s budget and evaluates its performance as well as assesses the overall impact of its implementation. And the board is also expected to make deliberate efforts to diversify the sources of income and support for the agency,” he added.

Chairman of the Board of the National Universities Commission, NUC, Prof Emeritus Ayo Banjo, who responded on behalf of all the boards, noted the enormous challenges in the education sector and stressed that the problems were interrelated.

Banjo pledged that the boards will do all they can to raise the standards of public universities across the country.
