The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council has urged political parties and their candidates to maintain decorum and preach peace to their teaming supporters ahead of the Saturday’s Governorship and State House of Assembly elections.

A statement issued by the Secretary of the Council, Abubakar Auwal Imam reminded them that, they don’t have any place other than Sokoto, hence, should not do anything that would plunge the state into avoidable crises.

Functional Democracy
The statement added that contestants should accept the decision of electorate to help sustain functional democracy.
“Power comes from God and he gives it to whoever He wishes and at the time He wishes to do so.

” Allah has already crowned the next Governor of the state, therefore,   we should tread with utmost piety, patriotism , caution and decorum.

“We should play the game by its rules and in the spirit of sportsmanship. Don’t allow your personal ego to override the overall interest of the society. Remember, there is life hereafter where we will give account of our worldly deeds before our Creator,” the statement said

It also called on the electorate to come out en masse and vote during the election and not to mortgage their future and the future of their children,   by selling their votes.

The NUJ further called on the security agencies to ensure adequate protection of lives and property before, during  and after the elections.

It further urged them to maintain neutrality and not to do anything that will portray them as biased, while discharging their constitutional responsibilities.
