‘Elite police’ shot dead Mozambique poll observer

There are growing calls for the authorities in Mozambique to explain why policemen were behind the killing of a prominent election observer.

Anastacio Matavel was shot dead in Gaza province in the south of the country on Monday by five men armed with assault rifles.

When their get away car was involved in a fatal crash, the police revealed that four of the five gunmen were members of an elite police unit known as the Rapid Intervention Force.

At Mr Matavele’s funeral on Wednesday religious leaders spoke of a reign of tyranny and the mayor of Xai-Xai called on the authorities to explain the motive of the killing, which comes just days ahead of elections.
