Peru’s return to the global football stage ended in tears as a 1-0 defeat to France ended their World Cup hopes in Russia.
A simple tap-in by french prodigy Kylian Mbappe in the 34th minute was all it took for France to win the game and book their place in the round of 16.
In truth, Peru totally outplayed and nullified the French midfield threat of Pogba, Kante and Griezman but poor finishing proved costly as Gurrerro and substitute Fafan could not beat Hugo Lloris in goal.
It was so sad as Peru poured everything in the second half and eventually got 10 shots, six of them on net.
It earned several corners and dangerous free kicks.
But the finishing touch was never there, despite the baying of thousands of Peruvian fans some of whom spent 15 hours making the trip to Russia and who totally outnumbered the French contingent
The result was no music to the ears of the Danes who now need only a point against table-topping Le Bleu to sail safely into the round of sixteen.
But on their part, Australia must now beat already-eliminated Peru and hope France do them a favour by defuse the Danish dynamites.
