An environment expert, Mr. Abdullahi Mohammed, has appealed to the public not to cut trees unnecessarily and without replacement to avoid flooding.
Mohammed, who made the call in Kaduna, said that massive deforestation is contributing to flooding, adding that deforestation posed a serious threat to human beings.
The expert noted that the state had faced different cases of flooding, which were later traced to not having enough trees.
He blamed the development on rampant deforestation trivial reasons such as firewood, charcoal, agricultural activities and construction.
According to Mohammed, man’s unsustainable felling of trees without replacing them is causing huge loss of property and large number of deaths.
The expert lamented that currently, most countries have less than five per cent forest areas, far below the UN recommendation.
