Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has presented a police officer who refused a bribe with a certificate.
He tweeted photos of him giving Siraj Abdella a certificate for his “courageous refusal to accept bribes from weapons smugglers”
Mr Siraj serves in the police service in the country’s north-eastern Afar region, one of hottest and driest places on Earth.
The area borders Djibouti and Eritrea and smugglers often use routes used by nomads through the desert.
The prime minister said there was much to be learned from people like the young officer who “protect peace and security of fellow citizens, dispensing their duties in honesty”.
