One of Egypt’s most famous singers has been sentenced to six months behind bars for a “foolish joke” about the state of the River Nile.
Sherine Abdel Wahab, who is a judge on the Arabic version of The Voice, was handed the sentence after being filmed telling a fan that drinking from the river could give them parasites, BBC reports.
“Drink Evian instead,” she joked.
Ms Abdel Wahab’s legal woes over the remark reportedly started in November last year after video surfaced online of her being asked to sing Mashrebtesh Men Nilha, which reportedly translates to have you drunk from the Nile?
The singer has since apologised for what she describes as a “foolish joke”.
“My beloved country Egypt and sons of my country Egypt, I apologise to you with all my heart for any pain I may have caused you,” She was quoted saying.
The parasite Ms Abdel Wahab joked about is caused by a parasitic worm that lives in fresh water and grows in the human body.
Ms Abdel Wahab has been ordered to pay a fine of 10,000 Egyptian pounds ($728) and 5000 Egyptian pounds ($364) in bail after being convicted of spreading false news.
