The Birnin-kudu Local Government Council of Jigawa is to relocate three communities being threatened by flood, according to its Vice Chairman, Alhaji Yusuf Musa.
Musa told newsmen in Birnin-kudu that the decision to relocate the three communities – Bodunga, Kawo and Shungur – was a proactive measure to avert flooding following the diversion of water routes from one of the rivers in the area.
“We took proactive measures by erecting embankments to protect the communities from the flooding river, but the water changed routes which has started causing havoc,” he said.
The official said that the local government council had already set up a committee to assess the level of damage caused by flood in the area.
“Last week, flood dislodged about 50 households across 10 communities, that is why we decided to set up a committee that will go round the local government area to assess the level of damage and the number of households affected,” he said.
He said that government would assist the victims, and advised residents to avoid building on waterways and desist from indiscriminate dumping of waste.
Musa urged the state and federal governments to support the council’s efforts to tackle the menace so as to save the rural communities.
