Flood: NGO wants effective collaboration, sensitisation

The Society for the Promotion of People`s Right, an NGO, has called on the Federal Government and other relevant stakeholders to collaborate for effective sensitisation on ways to prevent flooding in the country.

Mr Williams Osaze the president of the organisation, said that the collaboration would increase and improve effective sensitisation, especially in various flood prone communities in the country.

“The sensitisation campaign will help to educate those communities on how to manage drainage.

“They should tell people that their drainage should be covered to prevent dirt from getting into them.

“It is important to sensitise the communities to the fact that trees, shrubs and grass help to protect the land from erosion by moving water.

“People in low-lying areas must be encouraged to plant a lot of trees to help break the power of moving flood water and also help reduce erosion,’’ he said.

Osaze said that the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency announced recently that 36 states including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) would witness different levels of flooding in 2019.

He said that effective good working relationship with all levels of government by relevant stakeholders and effective sensitisation campaign would go a long way to prevent damaging level of flooding in the country.

“The measurement of the water level will thereby, help the experts to know the levels of streams and rivers, whereby taking appropriate actions to prevent loss of lives and property.’’

Osaze also advised all state and local governments to strictly embark on effective sensitisation campaign in the various communities for adequate information on flood risk.

The president, however, advised Nigerians to avoid building structures within the floodplains and water ways as well as ensuring that drains are adequately cleared.
