Foundation tasks sickle cell patients on healthy lifestyle

Sickle Cell Foundation has urged Persons Living with Sickle Cell Disease (PLSCD) to desist from consumption of processed food in order to live a healthy and fulfilled life.

Ms Oluchi Ndukwe, Founder of the organisation made the call at a medical outreach organised by the foundation on Sunday in Karu, FCT, on Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).

Ndukwe, also a sickle cell sufferer, attributed the prevalence of the crises among sickle cell patients to the kind of food they eat, water, exposure to cold and failure to access healthcare at regular basis, among others.

She said: “If you must live healthy you must imbibe the culture of eating locally processed food rather than artificial, drink clean water and also prevent yourself against mosquito bite by sleeping under mosquito treated net. Don’t wait till you have crises before you visit hospital but do that at regular intervals. Take your drugs especially Vitamin B complex and Folic Acid daily.”.

Ndukwe explained that their visit to Karu community was aimed at bringing succour to people suffering from the disease and their families by enlightening them on precautionary measures to ensure healthy living.

She however appealed for the collaboration of well meaning Nigerians toward making the nation sickle cell free by contributing their quota.

According to her, making the country a sickle cell free nation requires great effort and commitment from everyone.

“If I tell someone about what it takes to avoid sickle cell disease, you tell someone else tomorrow, some day even the local palm wine tapper in the village who hasn’t seen the four walls of any learning institution would get to know about SCD. Through this measure, everyone in Nigeria would have been reached,” she noted.
