Gombe House of Assembly impeaches Deputy Speaker

The Deputy Speaker of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Mr. Shu’aibu Haruna has been impeached.

Although no reason has been given for the impeachment, each member said it was an in-house issue, which was not opened for the executive or any other person to interfere.

Speaking with journalists soon after the impeachment, the member who moved the motion for the impeachment, Mr. Adamu Pata, said the 24 member legislature was a united assembly and it was not satisfied with the conduct of the impeached Deputy Speaker.

“It is the house that came together, that we don’t want the Deputy Speaker to stay there. Let him go. It is our problem within the house,” Mr. Pata said.

He stated that the impeached Deputy Speaker, from Kwami East Constituency, had now forfeited his seat for the member from Kwami West, because the slot of the Deputy Speaker was reserved for representatives of Kwami Local Government Area.

The House Committee Chairman on Information, Reverend Tulfugut Kardi, said members of the house woke up with the idea, which was internal, but that in due course, reasons would be revealed.

“I am not saying the public should not know what we are doing in the house. They elected us to be here and whatever we do must be made public. I am saying at this point we have nothing to say yet,” Rev. Kardi said.
