Gombe launches girl-child Non-Formal Learning Centres

Gombe State Governor's wife, Hajiya Asma’u Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, harped on the importance of Girl-child education.

The Gombe State Government has established Girl-child Non-formal Learning Centres in Kuri,Yamaltu/Deba local government areas of the State.

The government says it took the step because it wants to key in to the Better Education Service Delivery for All, BESDA.

The Nigerian Government had introduced the Better Education Service Delivery for All, to reduce out-of-school children and also to increase children enrollment in school.

At the Flag-off ceremony

The wife of the Gombe State Governor, Hajiya Asma’u Yahya who lunched the program encouraged parents to enroll their children, particularly Girl-child into school.

She said the number of out-of-school children in Gombe State was alarming, therefore, parents and guardians should help to change the narration.

“It is against this background that, Kuri Girl-child Learning Centre has been chosen for the flag-off to signal the commencement of Girl-child Non-Formal Learning Centres in Local Government Areas under the BESDA Programme-for-Result (P for R) in the State.”

According to her, “the collaboration with Better Education Services Delivery for All (BESDA), has the specific objectives of increasing access to education for all children.”

She assured of her husband’s readiness to continue to provide enabling environment for the success of BESDA programmes, as well as the education sector for the development of the State.

Improve Literacy Level
Also speaking at the event, BESDA coordinator, Mallam Abdullahi Bappah Garkuwa said relentless efforts are being made to improve literacy level among children of Gombe state.

He said one of the goals of BESDA, is to ensure that in 2 years time, Gombe State attains 60 per cent literacy level from its present 29 per cent.

Garkuwa stated that the Girl-child Learning Centres, would be establish in all 11 local government areas of the State.

On the 24th of December, 2019,  the BESDA coordinator, Dr. Abdullahi Bappah Garkuwa said BESDA program in Gombe currently have more than 110,000 learners across the State , with 118 girl-child and 783 Almajiri learning centres.

The wife of the Governor led her team on an inspection and advocacy visit to Balanga and Akko Local Government areas.
