Gombe state Governor, Inuwa Yahaya has inaugurated a task force to address the challenges of the health sector.
The task force, made up of 10 members, has Prof. Aliyu El-Nafaty, a medical doctor and former Medical Director Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, as Chairman.
The governor said, Gombe State was the only one among its peers without a Health Management Board and Social Insurance Scheme.
He said the team had responsibility to review the operational framework on human resources for the sector at all levels of the health system.
Yahaya also urged the team to suggest and implement immediate ways of bridging the health workforce gap.
He urged the team to conduct a rapid needs assessment of physical and operational key health facilities, especially the Specialist Hospital, and recommend improvements on short, medium and long term basis to meet required standards.
He also urged the committee to appraise the abandoned projects in the Specialist Hospital and see to its immediate completion using the best available option to the government.
Responding, El-Nafaty commended the governor for making health sector a priority.
He said health indices in the Northeast were poor and that Gombe State was not an exception.
He promised that his committee would work hard to ensure that they justified the confidence reposed on them.
