Google Inc has joined Nigerians to mark the country’s 59th anniversary with a doodle carrying the Nigerian flag and Google written in the colour green.

It is Google’s style to celebrate people, countries and events on auspicious occasions by displaying symbols to repressent the event on its search page and in the company’s name.

Earlier this year, the company celebrated the late Nigerian famous writer Buchi Emecheta with an image of the author on her birthday on its search page.

Nigeria became an independent country on October 1 1960.

The most populous African nation has since then passed different phases of growth, from military rule to a democracy in 1999.

Nigerians mark their independence with various activities including live shows, march pasts and musical events across the country, with an independence day address by the president broadcast on live TV.
