Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo has officially declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2019, under the opposition People’s Democratic Party.

The Governor, who made the declaration at the Government House in Gombe during a meeting with of the North-East Zonal Party executives and delegates, said he arrived at the decision after wide consultations across Nigeria.

“After much consultation with various stakeholders, I was asked to show interest and counting on your support I have accepted to contest for the office of the president under the PDP in 2019” Governor Dankwambo said.

Dr. Dankwambo, who is the second party member of the party in the North-East Zone to seek for the highest office in Nigeria, after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who had declared his intention last month in Yola.

Both Atiku and Governor Dankwambo believe it is the turn of the North-East Zone to produce the candidate, who will vie through the party for the highest political position in the country, because the zone and that the party would provide the kind of leadership needed to curb insecurity in the country.

The Director General of the Dankwambo Campaign Organisation, Professor Terhemba Shinja, said Governor Dankwambo deserved the ticket because he led other patriotic members of the party to rebuild it, when the actions of some people in the zone had almost killed the party in the north in 2015.

According to the Director General of the Dankwambo Campaign Organisation, Professor Terhemba Shinja, the North-East has always been significant to the Nigerian nation and as a party, because it had produced various leaders who had led the country through various stages in the 19 years of the democratic journey.

Professor Shinja however said even though the zone produced the first Prime Minister, it had never again been given the opportunity to do that again, hence the need for the zone to be considered for the presidency.

He said the major reason why Governor Dankwambo should be supported for the presidency was because of he had the qualities to secure the lives and property of Nigerians.

“We already have a party that is formidable, that has been led by credible people, one of which is the Governor of Gombe State. I will think that Nigerians have seen so much of impunity. Nigerians have seen so much of high handedness. Now we have good news for them. We are going to give to Nigerians a candidate who started learning the tenets of politics from 1999 and who has grown consistently with this system and who will never fail them. So, youth is on our side, dynamism is on our side and transparency is on our side,” Professor Shinja said.

There were words of supports from the various chapters of the People’s Democratic Party in the North-East, who all said the party and the zone deserved to be given to opportunity to lead the country to greatness.

For the Deputy National Chairman of the party, Senator Babayo Garba Gamawa, said he was sure that Governor Dankwambo would not disappoint Nigerians when given the chance to rule the country.

“I do believe, not because I am in Gombe, not because His Excellency Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo is by my side, but it is fact, if you want to present somebody for the leadership of the country, you have to be very sure of the qualities of that person. And you have to be optimistic that person will not disappoint you in one of the three areas, which are very cardinal and fundamental in leading a country like Nigeria. One, you have to be very sure beyond reasonable doubt that the person knows how to provide security for lives and property. You have to be sure that he knows how to provide infrastructure and you have to be sure that he knows how to provide, what? Job opportunities and build the economy,” Senator Gamawa.

On his part, Governor Dankwambo urged party members to be committed and loyal to the ideology of the party, so that every move would produce solutions to every challenge facing them.

He has no doubt that before now, it was believed that no politics would successful without money, but it had changed now and it is he believed strongly that politics is by credibility.

Governor Dankwambo declared that he had accepted the call by the North East to go for the presidency under the People’s Democratic Party form Zone.
