The Society for Water and Sanitation (NEWSAN) has called on the 9th National Assembly to revisit the Water Bill to ensure proper management and coordination of the water sector.
Mr Attah Benson, the National Coordinator of NEWSAN, made the call while speaking with Journalists in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
He said the non passage of the bill by the last Assembly had made it difficult for some agencies within the sector to carry out their responsibilities.
According to him, if the bill is passed and assented to, there will be proper management and coordination of the water sector.
He also said that certain responsibilities, specifically meant for some of the government agencies, would be properly carried out, if the bill is passed and signed into law by the president.
Benson noted that the issue of sanitation was a major concern to the group, adding that it was the vision of the group that Nigeria would be cleaned
“To this end, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, last year, declared a state of emergency in the water and sanitation sector.
“Some state governments have also keyed into it by also declaring state of emergency and scaling up their interventions on water and sanitation in their different states,“ he stated.
