The Rural Environmental Empowerment Initiative (T.R.E.E) Initiative and the Growing Green Initiative (GGI) in Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Oyo state, South-west Nigeria collaborated to plant a million trees in the institution.
Mr. Sola Kolawole, a Co-founder of T.R.E.E Initiative gave the information during the symbolic tree planting event held at LAUTECH in Ogbomoso. And the tree planting project was tagged: “One Student One Tree Project’’.
Over a thousand seedlings were planted by students volunteers and the university management staff to kick-start the project.
Kolawole said that the essence of massive planting of trees for carbon sequestration was to mitigate the effect of climate change in Nigeria.He appreciated the LAUTECH management for adopting the project beyond the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences.
The environmentalist admonished the institution to explore the wealth creation component of the project through GGI, adding that the project, if properly implemented would in address some perennial funding challenges of the university.
