Fatai Atanda, Technical Committee Member of the Nigeria Hockey Federation, has promised greater future for the game in Nigeria.
Atanda, who spoke in Abuja, said that the federation had a six-year plan for the development of hockey.
He said that the country’s U-17 hockey team would spur surprises in competitions in the future.
“We are investing much in grooming the current U-17 hockey team as formidable foundation for the game
“Certainly, the team will go on to represent Nigeria in both the U-21 Cup of Nations as well as the World Cup,” he said.
According to him, optimal capacities of players and coaches will guarantee victory in matches.
The official, who identified inadequate funding as one of the challenges of hockey development, called for more funding.
“Poor funding has caused us a lot; we would have lifted the trophy in Algiers.’’
Nigeria’s U-17 hockey team came fourth in the just-concluded African Youth Games in Algiers.
