Peter Moreno, a British-based Nigerian-born Decathlete, says he will channel his energy to the preparation for the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Championships.

Moreno, who was left out from the Nigerian contingent to the upcoming Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, said he tried his very best to make the cut.

“I have a career outside sports that I could have gone so far in.

“But I chose to give my time and dedication to the sport. The Commonwealth Games trials was a competition I had to do, if I had the choice I wouldn’t have done it.

“Early 2017 I scored 7257 then I said to myself that when I come to Nigeria, I will better myself.

“On getting here what I saw was below the standard that anyone should even compete in. That being said, we still competed and gave it our best.

“My next target now even though I have already qualified is African championships, I intend to put in my best,” he said.

Moreno, who is an officer with the British Army, told NAN that with the right atmosphere, he would have made the country proud at the Games.

“With all the right things and more crowd I am very sure a lot of us would have done better, I know for sure I would have done better if I was to be at the Commonwealth Games.

“I know that with the level of crowd in Gold Coast, I would have competed better. I derive my energy from the fans,’’ he said.

He said that his love for the event and family kept him going in spite of the complexity of the event.

“My motivation is my friends, family and coaches and the love of the sports, nothing else. I have a career outside the sports, but due to the love I have for decathlon, I can’t leave it,’’ he said.

He added that Decathlon was never his number one event in athletics, but indicated interest because of a teammate of his at the William Park Sports College.

“He was the one that gave me the idea back then while in school.

“As for the events, I approach each one like it’s my main event. Once I’m done with each event, I forget about it and move to the next one.

“Though I am weak in some events like the throws, but that I can work on and am working on it, ” he said.

Decathlon is a combined event in athletics consisting of ten track and field events.

Events are held over two consecutive days and the winners are determined by the combined performance in all.

Performance is judged on a points system in each event, not by the position achieved. The decathlon is contested mainly by male athletes.
