A massive brawl broke out among party agents as collation and announcement of Imo state gubernitorial election results were underway – ending the process abruptly.
Results from 11 local government areas had been announced before the pandemonium in a collation center situated inside the INEC office in Owerri, the Imo state capital, began.
The People’s Democratic Party, PDP was winning in 5 local government areas with a wide margin, Action Alliance, AA, was trailing behind it but also wining in 5 local government areas while the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA won in Onuimo, only.
The fight started when the collation officer for Ideato South local government area and his assistant were called upon to collate results from Ideato South local overnment.
The PDP state agent, Uche Onyeagocha asked the state returning officer to reject the result on the grounds that all party agents except AA agents were sent out of the local government collation center before it was signed.
He argued that the result was manipulated.
The arguement led to the AA agent requesting for cancellation of results from Aboh Mbaise, where PDP won with a wide margin.
The argument resulted to fisticuffs and throwing of chairs as everyone both journalists, INEC Officials and election observers ran for safety.
Security agents later brought the situation under control but INEC stopped the process abruptly and ordered Journalists and Observers out of the collation center and locked it up.
As it is, no one knows when collation and announcement of Imo state gubernatorial election results will commence.
The situation in Owerri was tense in the early hours as some youths in their large numbers blocked the road leading to INEC office.
