Information Minister charges board members on accountability,transparency

Nigeria’s information and culture minister,Mr Lai Mohammed has charged the newly inaugurated board members of the various agencies under the ministry to work under the core principles of President Buhari.

He said the government believes in fighting corruption,entrenchment of accountability and transparency and that should form the basis of the boards.

He made this remarks when he officially inaugurated the board members of parastatals under the ministry in Abuja on Friday.

“It is always a great honour to be called to serve one’s nation. Your appointment is a call to service, and I have no doubt that you will live up to the great task before you.

You must, therefore, see yourself as part of government, and to contribute your own quota to the success of this Administration.”

The minister remarked further that  the role of the board of any organization is to formulate policies, and NOT to engage in the day-to-day running of the organization.

“The Board is to evolve strategic ways of supporting the agency so it can most effectively deliver its mandate. I am sure some of you are already conversant with this, but it is necessary to restate it here for the benefit of all”

The Minister said there are also some vital information that the members need to have: In line with extant regulations, he said boards are to sit for a maximum of four (4) times a year; due to government’s lean resources,he also advised that  the constitution of sub-committees of the Board is not advisable.

He also stated that , at all times, the board members should ensure to maintain a cordial relationship with the Chief Executive Officer of  the agencies under their watch.

Another salient point he raise was that of employment.He submitted that  It was also important  to know that, due to the introduction of the IPPIS in the payment of staff salaries in the public service, agencies are constrained in employing staff until
permission is sought and received from the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation.

On his part,chairman of the National Gallery of Arts board,Ambassador Umar Azara thanked president Buhari for the opportunity given them to served and on behalf of others pledged to serve the country diligent.
