The Director, Agriculture & Agro-Industry of the African Development Bank, AfDB, Dr. Martin Fregene has said that the only way to transform Nigeria’s Agricultural sector is innovation.
Fregene who disclosed this while delivering a keynote address at the first day of the Feed Nigeria Summit 2018 in Abuja, said that the Nigeria’s Agricultural sector was under-performing because the farmers lacked innovation to produce.
According to him ”For Nigerian to have a strong and competitive Agricultural Sector, she needs to encourage and allow the improvement of Technology and Innovation”.
“In the early seventies, Sorghum was a more preferable crop than Maize, but now, innovation has transformed maize into the preferred crop”. he added.
He lamented that “At the heart of rural poverty is the lack of innovation to raise productivity that our farmers have access to”.
Dr. Fregene however noted that to increase Agricultural Productivity in Nigeria, there was need for New Crop and Livestock varieties delivered to farmers, New approach to Soil Fertility Management, innovative Financing and titles for every farm Land in the country.
