The International Organisation for Migration has stated that it is important to have a working relationship with agencies like Voice of Nigeria VON to boost cooperation and disseminate information on activities of the Organisation.
The IOM Chief of Mission, Franz Celestin, stated this when he paid a courtesy call to Voice of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday.
Mr Celestin said he is in VON to formally enlighten VON on what IOM does in Nigeria and how they can work together adding that IOM programmes in Nigeria affects all Nigerians at large.
“IOM works with agencies to repatriate people who are stranded in foreign countries and help integrate them into the society” he explained.
He also stated that whenever there is a repatriation, IOM is usually involved and works hand in hand with the Nigerian government.
Speaking at the event Director of Engineering Jerimoth Canice, welcomed the IOM and assured them that VON would do all to help tell their stories to the world.
He explained that VON broadcasts in 8 languages and would be in the best position to reach a wider audience.
The Director of Digital Media, Hajia Sani noted that a partnership with both organisations would go a long way to provide VON with authentic, usable information. According to her, “this is at the heart of the functions of VON; to provide factual, verifiable and timely information about issues in Nigeria, Africa and throughout the world”.
IOM Public Information Officer, Jorge Galindo explained that the media plays an important role in creating awareness and carrying ideas, adding that the role of the media cannot be over-emphasised.
He also noted that it is similarly important for Journalists to be aware of the current Immigration issues and also for the IOM to understand the mode of reportage of Nigerian Journalists.
