Africa’s most successful table tennis players Segun Toriola and Funke Oshonaike on Friday crashed out at the quarter-final stages of the 2018 ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup holding in Nairobi, Kenya.
Oshonaike lost 4-2 to another former champion Cameroon’s Sarah Hanffou while Toriola was stunned by Congo’s Saheed Idowu by same margin.
Another top seed Egypt’s Farah Abdel-Aziz was booted out by unseeded Algeria’s Lynda Loghraibi in the women’s event after losing 4-3.
Meanwhile, the heavyweights of the competition progressed as Aruna Quadri and Omar Assar of Egypt progressed to the semi-finals of the men’s singles while Nigeria’s Edem Offiong also progressed to the semi-final of the women’s singles after a 4-2 victory over Tunisia’s Safa Saidani.
Egypt’s Ahmed Saleh was stretched by Algeria’s Sami Kherouf, who later lost 4-2 to the Egyptian veteran.
In the semi-finals, Quadri faces Saleh while Assar takes on Idowu in the men’s event.
Defending champion Egypt’s Dina Meshref takes on Offiong while giant-killing duo of Loghraibi and Hanffou battle in the second semi-final of the women’s event.
The tournament ends on Saturday with final matches.
