Jamb appoints Professor Jega to head committee on admissions

The Immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega ,has been appointed as the Chairman of the Committee on internalization of Admissions into Tertiary Educational Institutions in Nigeria.

The board also made known that Prof. Jega would  be assisted by Professor Emeritus, Olugbemiro Jegede ,the former Vice-chancellor of National Open University of Nigeria.

Other members of the nine-man committee includes the former Vice Chancellor of the federal university of Agriculture , Prof olushola Oyewole, the former Vice chancellor of university of Uyo, Professor Comfort Ekpo ,Prof Aminu Mikailu, Prof Domwini Kuupole .

Former Chairman of the Association of West African Universities AWAU, Professor Adenike Oladimeji, Fasasi Zubairu.

Inaugurating the committee, the Registrar of the Board, Professor Ishaq Oloyede pointed that setting up the committee was necessary in view of the prevailing localization of tertiary institutions in  the country, hence the need to urgently put in place the machinery to actualize the internationalization of admissions in Nigeria beginning from the 2019/2020 academic session.

He hinted that a six man in house committee to be chaired by the Board’s Director of Test Administration ,Dr Yusuf Lawal ,has been constituted to serve as the implementation sub committee .

The Jega-led committee is to come up with strategies for the internalization of admissions into Nigeria tertiary institutions through JAMB .

The committee would also encourage ,advise and support tertiary institutions particularly, the universities on how to attract foreign candidates into the Nigerian tertiary education system.

Prof Jega’s committee is also charged with suggesting veritable ways and means through which the foreign centres of JAMB could attract more candidates, especially Nigerians in diaspora, to apply for admission into Nigerian universities as well as develop a new template for conducting the unified tertiary matriculation examination in more foreign countries.

Furthermore the internationalization committee will be expected to make recommendations on strategies that the Nigerian higher institutions could adopt to promote the internationalization of their respective institutions, promote mobilities in the Nigerian tertiary education system, develop pathways and encourage curriculum infusions for all round developments of students .

The Registrar however charged the committee to develop framework for comprehensive advocacy program which will include the use of technology and social media as vital tools for increasing public understanding and appreciation of the objectives of internationalizing higher education in Nigeria.
