Jigawa targets 800 hectares for cluster farming support

The Cluster Farming Support Programme initiated by Jigawa Government will soon cover 800 hectares of land in Marma and Zagari towns in Kirikasamma Local Government Area of the state.

Alhaji Salisu Garba-Kubayo, the local government chairman, disclosed this in Zagari on Thursday while distributing food items to victims of the recent suspected herdsmen attack in the town.

He said that the state government had promised to introduce the programme in the area to support the victims whose farmlands were destroyed during the attack.

The chairman said that farmers would be supported with fertiliser, herbicides, pesticides and improved seeds to use in the dry season.

Garba-Kubayo appealed to the state Police Commissioner, Mr Bala Sanchi to establish an outpost in Zagari to curtail the reoccurring farmers and herdsmen clashes in the area.

Responding, the Ward Head of Zagari, Alhaji Umaru Zagari, noted that the council’s assistance was the first of its kind since the reoccurring crises began 10 years ago in the area.

He commended the police for massive deployment of personnel to the area to clear the attackers and maintain law and order.

Zagari, however, appealed to the state to reconstruct the Zagari-Marma road to enhance movement of people and farm produce.

The road will address the challenges of transportation here, and policemen deployed will also not be wading through a waist-deep river in search for criminals,” he said.

Items donated included cartons of noodles, bags of guinea corn and millet.
