Kaduna Assembly passes State Electoral Commission bill

The Kaduna State House of Assembly passed the long-awaited Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission (SIECOM) Bill No. 10 of 2012.

The bill seeks to substitute the Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2012.

The Speaker, Alhaji Aminu Shagali, explained that the new bill would provide the necessary framework for an efficient and effective system to ensure the conduct of credible and hitch-free Local Government election.

“The bill will also strengthen the electoral system by introducing the use of electronic voting machine to forestall electoral malpractices and ensure that elections are transparent, free, and fair.

“According to the bill, verification and voting will be done through the use of approved electronic devices, smart card reader and the electronic voting machine, he stressed“.

Shagali further disclosed that the bill guaranteed any voter whose name appeared in the register, but could not be verified through the use of the devices, to vote.

Contributing, the Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Judiciary, Mr Kantiok Irmiya, said with the passage of the bill, Kaduna people should expect free and fair local government elections.

According to him, before the bill was passed, a public hearing was conducted and the views of the people embedded in it, making it the law of the masses.

The assembly also passed the Kaduna State Local Government Service Commission Bill, 2012 and other bills.
