The Kano State’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources who doubles as the Deputy Governor, Nasiru Gawuna has resigned alongside 10 other Commissioners in the state.
This is the sequel to a 48 hours ultimatum the Governor of Kano state, Umar Ganduje gave last Saturday night to political office holders seeking elective positions in the 2023 general Elections.
The directive follows the provisions of the newly amended electoral act section 84 subsection 12 which requires political office holders seeking elective positions to resign months before the February 2023 general elections.
According to Gawana; “My decision to resign as Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources is to further my political career. I will continue to give contributions towards the development of the State as your loyal deputy in the mandate given to us by the Kano people.“
The Commissioners that have so far resigned are; Agriculture, Education, Rural Development, Local Government, Water Resources, Health, Budget and Planning, Special Duties, Tourism and Culture, Housing and Transport, Youths and Sports.
Ali Makoda, the Chief of Staff to Governor Ganduje, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Monitoring and Evaluation, Farouq Sule Garo are among other top political appointees that have also resigned.
The Commissioner for local government Murtala Garo also resigned to contest the 2023 Election as Governor.
The Commissioner for Rural Development Ilyasu Musa Kwankwaso in his resignation speech in Hausa language said he is moving on to contest for the Kura, Garun Mallam and Madobi Federal constituency to serve the people better, urging people to “Support but not to regard it as a do or die affair.”
In his letter of resignation, the Commissioner for Education, Sunusi Saidu Kiru said his resignation is to afford him the opportunity to contest for “The Bebeji/ Kiru Federal constituency at the House of Representatives.”
They all commended Governor Ganduje’ for the opportunity given to them to serve the state as well as the experience gotten while working under his leadership.
The ultimatum to resign will expire on Monday 18 Mach, 2022.
