A girls’ school in Kenya has closed for a “short break” after 52 students fell ill. It was initially referred to as a “mystery illness” but the school has since confirmed a flu outbreak.
Starehe Girls Centre in Nairobi sent a letter home to parents asking them to collect their daughters immediately.
“There is a lot of tension in the school,” one of the teachers told reported.
On its website, Starehe Girls Centre describes itself as “a national boarding school that offers secondary education to financially disadvantaged girls from all counties of Kenya”.
The flu, which the school said was “minor”, left girls with a high-pitched cough, sneezing and low-grade fever.
