The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello has called for a concerted effort to enhance good nutrition for babies by supporting mothers to breastfeed their babies well.

Governor Bello said the society has a role to play in making the communities more breastfeeding-friendly.

Healthy growth
He spoke as the world celebrates the 2018 World Breastfeeding Awareness Week tagged:“Breastfeeding: the foundation of life”.

He congratulated Breastfeeding mothers and their families for the opportunity to be part of individuals strengthening procreation in the state.

Governor Bello said ”Breastfeeding was important to the healthy growth of children and breast milk has been proven to be cheap, safe and promotes bonding between mother and child.”

He said he was mindful of the fact that maternal nutrition has impact on the nutrition of their babies.

Sustained breastfeeding
“This is why we firmly believe that breast milk is the ideal nutrition for babies, and we support and promote the World Health Organization’s recommendation of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, followed by the introduction of nutritious and appropriate complementary foods, along with sustained breastfeeding, for up to two years of age and beyond,”he said.

He assured working mothers in particular and Kogi mothers in general that his administration was not just working to ensure that irregularities in salary payment becomes a thing of the past.

The government is also working on diversifying the economy of Kogi State for economic growth and human development.
