Senators under the platform of the governing All Progressives Congress, APC, have disclosed the “real truth” behind the emergence of Senator Ahmed Lawan as the party’s preferred candidate to lead the 9th Senate and by extension, the National Assembly, insisting that it was never an imposition but a coincidence.
They also declared that 98% of the Senators in the APC caucus have endorsed the party’s candidate ahead of the election in three days time.
At a press conference held in Abuja on Saturday, the APC Senators said it had become imperative to help Nigerians understand the true position of things before the elections for principal officers of the 9th National Assembly.
Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, one of the arrow heads of the Senator Lawan campaign group, narrated how the incident happened contrary to the information that had been circulating in the public domain.
“When I hear people talk about imposition by our party, I laugh and also get worried at how misinformed they are. I say this because, I was the first person that called Ahmed Lawan just after my election, and I informed him that we want him to be prepared to lead us in the 9th Senate. So, whatever be the decision of the party as to where to zone the Presidency, we are ready to support his candidature if it is zoned to the north east,” he said.
Senator Abdullahi went further to explain that, “after assuring Lawan of our support base,I mobilised some of our colleagues whose elections were already confirmed as at that time and we all agreed to champion Ahmed Lawan’s candidacy. Thereafter, we went to meet with the SGF Mr. Boss Mustapha and our party’s National Chairman Comrade Adams Oshiomole, to inform them of our decision, which was that, we have a candidate in the person of Senator Ahmed Lawan If the party decides to zone that position to the north east.
“That was what happened, and we immediately went to Lagos to meet with Journalists in that axis of the country. It was while we were in Lagos that we received a call to come to the Villa, and on arriving in the Villa, we were told that the party hierarchy and Presidency have zoned the Presidency of the Senate to the north east while also agreeing to also support our chosen candidate, Senator Ahmed Lawan. So, it was a coincidence,” he explained.
”The APC caucus also announced that, among the 62 senators elected under the platform of their party, 60 of them have endorsed Lawan’s candidacy while the remaining two whose names where not mentioned, were yet to endorse him “for obvious reason,” the Secretary of the Lawan campaign group, Senator Barau Jubril.
Senator Jubril also named Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of the YPP as the 61st senator to have endorsed the Lawan’s bid.
A copy of the endorsement list obtained by VON Correspondent, confirmed the caucus’ position.
The National Assembly Complex is now agog with all necessary arrangements including accreditation being put in place to ensure a hitch free inauguration of the 9th Legislature.
